Founded in 2005, Matthews Design Group (MDG) has become the largest civil engineering firm based in St. Johns County, and offers full service civil and land development engineering throughout Northeast Florida

 

We have earned a solid reputation for providing high quality, innovative engineering solutions provided in a timely and cost-effective manner.

This reputation of dedication, technical experience, and a proven record of success, has afforded MDG the opportunity to work under numerous continuing services contracts as an extension of our client's staff.

MEET OUR LEADERSHIP TEAM

Keri Matthews
Chief Executive Officer

Keri officially joined MDG in 2008 to manage the financial and human resources of the company. In this capacity, she used her degree in Industrial Engineering from Clemson University and drew upon her experience with Rockwell Automation, an international leader in automation technology, to aid in reinventing and reorganizing MDG during the downturn in the economy. She implemented new processes that streamlined costs and internal processes, optimized resources, and diversified their business model.

Her past performance as an industrial engineer with Rockwell Automation, she assisted manufacturing facilities such as GA Pacific and Springs Industries with automation and process related consulting solutions.

In 2000, Keri led and grew the volunteer program at Marineland. When offered a full-time position in the training department, she took five years off from the engineering world to be a Dolphin Trainer where she cared for and trained Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphins. She created an internship program for college students to earn college credit and gain valuable experience working alongside the training staff.

President

Rob has built a thriving company by establishing solid, long-term partnerships with his clients through integrity, honest communication, and dependability.

Earning a master’s degree in civil engineering from Clemson University in 2001, Rob has gained experience in all phases of land development, civil engineering, and environmental and regulatory permitting. 

Rob believes “the heart of any company is its people. We are creating a company culture that makes Matthews Design Group a professional yet fun-spirited place to work where employees feel valued, respected, and empowered."

He also donates his time on the Service Board for Flagler Hospital, as Chairman of the Economic Development Council for the St. Johns County Chamber of Commerce, and as Board President at The Arc of the St. Johns. Rob is known for his project management and public outreach abilities. The commitment and dedication to his employees and the community, along with quality designs and service contribute to Matthews Design Group’s solid reputation.

Jeremy is a seasoned design and construction engineer with over 13 years of site/civil engineering and construction knowledge, most of which has come from onsite development and design projects of various size, scope and complexity. He has experience designing municipal facilities, planned communities, waterfront sites, roadways, stormwater, and drainage systems. Jeremy is consistently driving and producing exceptional business outcomes. His approach and expertise has led to many successful projects.

Alex Acree, PE
Senior Project Manager

With 12 years of experience working in northeast Florida and southern Georgia, Alex provides high-quality, hands-on project management
services, and leads his team of engineers from project conception through design, permitting,
construction, inspections, and certifications for multiple development and land use projects.
He has worked on a variety of projects ranging from large master drainage residential subdivisions to small commercial units with dry retention/detention facilities and
underground stormwater systems.

Scott Knowles, PE, LEED AP
Senior Project Manager

Scott has over 22 years of experience in all phases of land development engineering, including site and roadway design, stormwater modeling, utility design and coordination, and regulatory permitting. He has designed and managed numerous projects, which include roadways, residential subdivisions, shopping centers, commercial and industrial, mining sites, educational, and recreational facilities. Scott has specialized expertise in GIS databases, and in pump and power systems design for sanitary and stormwater lift stations, and in the
design of pipes and pipeworks for drainage and stormwater management systems.

Chris Buttermore, PE
Senior Project Manager

Chris brings 12 years of design experience on both private and public sector civil engineering projects. His background includes management and design roles on roadway transportation systems and roadway projects ranging from small scale, local roadways and driveways to large scale design-build interchange projects. Chris is also experienced in land development, and has provided site design services for residential, commercial,
and industrial projects.

Keri and Rob started MDG in 2006 and built it from the ground up. When the economy and work sharply declined in 2008, Keri’s primary focus became reinventing and reorganizing MDG to help it survive. As CEO, Keri manages the overall operations, finances, and resources of the company. In this capacity, she draws upon her degree in industrial engineering from Clemson University and upon her past experience with Rockwell Automation, an international leader in automation technology. She has continued to implement new processes that streamline costs and internal operations, optimize resources, improve quality control, and diversify the firm's business model.

Keri has a passion for helping children. Since 2007, she has served on the Family Advisory Council of Wolfson Children's Hospital, as well as volunteering for many other community organizations.

Matthew Jurney, PLA
Director of Landscape Architecture

Matt comes to MDG with 14 years of experience in the landscape architecture and land planning industry, and is a graduate from the University of Georgia with a BS degree in Landscape Architecture. His expertise was developed while serving a variety of clients on numerous types of projects ranging from roadway widening to commercial and residential developments.

During his tenure with FDOT D2 as Landscape Architecture via GEC Program Support, his responsibilities included landscape design, master planning, work on design-build and other roadway projects, cost estimating, 3D modeling, video production, and community involvement.

 

Matt has also served as the City of Jacksonville’s Landscape Architect and was responsible for ensuring compliance with requirements and codes.

Stephanie Piagno
Director of Marketing

Stephanie brings over 25 years of experience working for large engineering consultant firms specializing in professional services. Her expertise was developed while serving a variety of clients, which provided services ranging from roadway, survey, structural, land development, landscape architecture, construction, and environmental.

 

She is responsible for providing guidance to our marketing department by evaluating, developing, and communicating marketing strategies; planning and coordinating marketing efforts; and building brand awareness.

Scott has over 23 years of experience in all phases of land development engineering, including site and roadway design, stormwater modeling, utility design and coordination, and regulatory permitting. AWARDS & PUBLICATIONS

MDG is a proud supporter of SAPMS and the Makers Fest! MDG owner, Rob Matthews, attended Montessori school as a child where he grew up in Hilton Head, SC. He loved Montessori and says he still can visualize the Montessori tools he used to learn in his classroom. Rob, along with his family, have been part of the SAPMS family since its inception. They helped fundraise to start the school and continued to raise money to grow the school along with donating engineering services when needed.

After growing and learning from their respective career paths, Rob and Keri had the desire and ambition to create something unique. They wanted to combine their favorite aspects from prior work experience while adding their own innovation and fresh ideas. Rob and Keri's vision was and still is to make the clients' projects successful by being the best at what we do, hiring the best talent, and creating the best work environment. 

MDG was founded in 2005 with two employees, and has since grown to over 35 employees. Working from our St. Augustine office, MDG proudly serves clients throughout Northeast Florida.

The Flagler Health System annual weekend at The Hammock helped raise money for “Flagler Plus” community initiatives and was filled with family fun, gourmet food, great camaraderie with other attendees, and culminated with an elegant gala dinner and casino night reception! The speakers eloquently conveyed the vision and direction of Flagler Health for continued and increased outreach to the community with an extra focus on mental health support for the youth of our community. It was a beautifully orchestrated weekend down to the last detail and definitely a weekend to remember!

MDG was among the 50 companies selected from more than 500 nominees for Florida Companies to WatchSM, a statewide program managed by economic development group GrowFL, in association with the Edward Lowe Foundation.

 MDG's management team, competitive market position and strong community involvement were among several factors that put us in contention for the award.

We look forward to our annual MDG Family Beach Blast each year! This year, we added "Pirate Games" where kid teams and adult teams competed to win Pirate Treasure and cash prizes!
